Sex.mp4 is a media art project I created as an unofficial music video for Fantastic Plastic Machine’s track Sex during my motion design elective. The piece dives into the chaotic nostalgia of the 1990s internet — when interfaces were clunky, unstructured, and filled with graphic noise, but also vibrant, experimental, and full of self-expression. I wanted to capture that mix of awkwardness and energy, turning it into an immersive audiovisual journey.
To build the visual language, I researched the Internet Archive and pulled assets from early Geocities pages, reworking their HTML layouts into graphic elements. I also drew inspiration from Neil Cicierega’s “animutations” — surreal, euphoric Flash animations that embodied the collage-like spirit of early net art. References to Olia Lialina’s browser narratives, especially My Boyfriend Came Back From the War, shaped how I approached fragmented storytelling and non-linear flow.
The final video layers these references with vaporwave aesthetics, inserting classical Greek statues as symbols of 1990s glamour, consumerism, and techno-optimism. Aggressively animated, they appear strained and unsettling — a bridge between the disillusionment of the present and the abandoned futurist dreams of the past.
