Despite thousands of beautiful words from state authorities about life in North Korea, refugees tell a starkly different story – hunger, poverty and human rights violations. The challenge was to convey these harsh realities in a way that held readers’ attention and encouraged empathy.
Longreads can feel heavy, so I chose to present the narrative as an interactive experience. To keep viewers focused and immersed, I styled the page like an arcade game. This playful, retro aesthetic contrasts with the serious subject matter, making the topic approachable without diminishing its importance. Using Readymag, I designed pixel‑art illustrations, side‑scrolling transitions and on‑screen prompts that guide readers through the story. Each chapter highlights a different aspect of the refugees’ journey—crossing borders, surviving in hidden safe houses, and starting new lives.
The interactive format keeps readers engaged from start to finish. By blending storytelling with gamelike mechanics, Escape the Kim invites people to learn about the refugee experience in a memorable, human way. If you add this case study block beneath the existing text, your page will help visitors understand your design choices without overwhelming them.
