Sex.mp4 is a media art project and music video I created for Fantastic Plastic Machine’s track Sex during a motion design elective. The work explores the chaotic nostalgia of the 1990s internet—an era of clunky, unstructured, and graphically noisy interfaces that were also wildly creative and full of self-expression. I aimed to capture that mix of awkwardness and energy through an immersive audiovisual collage.
To build its visual language, I researched the Internet Archive and reworked assets from early Geocities pages into dynamic graphic compositions. I drew inspiration from Neil Cicierega’s surreal animutations and Olia Lialina’s early net-art narratives, incorporating their fragmented, non-linear storytelling techniques. The final video layers vaporwave aesthetics with aggressively animated Greek statues, referencing 1990s glamour, consumerism, and techno-optimism—ultimately contrasting the utopian dreams of the past with the disillusionment of the present.
